Summer Excitement: Indoor Version
Article by Emeka Balakumar
Four months ago, I was dreaming of all the summer plans I will make, the summer outfits I would wear, and all the memories I wanted to create. Fast forward to today - we are stuck indoors and living our summer exploring all the rooms of our homes. Though it is not the summer we were hoping for, everyone is playing their part in helping each other get through this.
Many of the exciting activities that I was looking forward to are being brought online. Here are some of my personal favourites happening throughout July:
1. The Newest Trick in The Macbook
Magic shows have always blown my mind away, and the Toronto Magic Company is hosting an open mic magic show that gives you that same interactive show from the comfort of your phone. On July 14th, Magicians from all over the world will be performing in front of your eyes, for FREE.
2. The Canadian Undergraduate Technology Conference
I miss case competitions and conferences that were held at Schulich. During my first year, they allowed me to grow as a person. Luckily, The Canadian Undergraduate Technology Conference brings that experience onto a virtual platform. The best thing about this is that you can come and attend the conference at any point in the day, and there is an event for everyone. Speakers from Google, RBC, Facebook, Microsoft and more tech leaders will talk about how young visionaries can change the world of technology, all for free.
3. Baking with Buds
Quarantine has got me cooking for myself, and my love for food has only increased. My personal favourite Instagram account to follow is Michel Et Augustin. Their specialty is bringing clean ingredients into tasty recipes. During July, they will be holding three Instagram lives where they invite a new chef to create a recipe with ingredients that many people have at home. My favourite recipe was the S’mores pizza with Chef Mel, and it is something I still make regularly when my sweet tooth is acting up.
4. Virtual Day Party
Do you miss loud music and dancing? Luckily, iLife Chicago is hosting a virtual day party with 2 DJ’s coming on every week. Depending on your schedule, you can get a ticket for whichever week you wish during the month. You can watch, listen and engage for four hours, or you could leave whenever you wish. The same party experience you miss can be brought to your room all with a click of a link.
5. Pastry Art: Vanilla Cupcakes
For those of you who would be interested in taking baking from a quarantine passion to a business, Skills Ontario is having a virtual workshop on multiple days
(you just need to attend one!) that teaches (or refines) your essential baking and pastry skills. The day will consist of food preparation, presentation skills, and so many more key skills needed in creating yummy treats.
And if none of these interest you, don’t worry! Go to eventbrite.ca and search up any event that you miss doing in person, and you might find something you like happening soon! A lot of creators have brought their content onto an online platform to make this summer a little different than usual, but just as fun! Make sure to take advantage of all these opportunities happening around us - we’d love to know if you tried any of these!
