How to Balance Part-Time Work and School?

Working part-time and going toschool is the norm for many students. However, many underestimate their abilityto maintain the right balance that is healthy for their mind and body andallows them to be productive. Insider Media Group is here to help give youthree tips to keep in mind while balancing part-time work and Schulich.

1. Prioritize.

Make a calendar or agenda with your work shifts and all your school deadlines. Don’t fall behind in school because of work. Plan ahead, stay ahead and manage your time wisely. Make daily plans for certain readings you want to do before/after work. This will allow you to stay on top of it throughout the whole semester instead of cramming for an exam the night before. It is, of course, easier said than done but believe us, a day-to-day plan will allow you to stay focused. It’s also okay if you don’t meet your goals in one day. There is always tomorrow, but you just have to learn to prioritize it. Make good use of your commute too. If you’re taking the bus you can always catch up on some readings or work on something important. Time is of the essence so don’t let it go to waste.

2. Take time off work when needed.

If you start feeling burnt-out, take a day off of work. Your mental health always takes precedence. Take a day off to just hang out with family or friends and do the things that make you happy. Don’t feel guilty to take a day off. In order to write the best essay or think intelligently through an assignment or project, you have to be at your optimal point, not at your lowest. Therefore, it is okay to recharge and come back physically and mentally stronger.

3. Besides work and school, never forget you have a life to live.

While it is great to talk about the balance between school and work, it is equally vital to consider the third factor as well – your LIFE. Don’t alienate yourself so much for four years that you eventually become a zombie. Don’t give up on your hobbies and passions – continue to pursue them and continue to explore new adventures, and that is what will foster your growth. This is also how you will be able to differentiate yourself from your peers. Your passions and experiences are unique to you so make the most of them instead of pushing them aside.
