Insider Insights: IMG’s 7th Annual Media Conversations Panel

Written by Sarah Di Iorio

THE MCP CASE COMPETITION:

On Friday November 17th, the Insider Media Group hosted the 7th Annual Media Conversations Panel. The memorable day allowed like-minded Undergraduate Schulich students across years to come together and enrich themselves in the world of business and media, participating in a pressure-packed case competition. Read on for a recap of all the excitement that the day brought!

Our Takeaways:

Here are two key takeaways we found as we watched the teams compose their presentations:

Teamwork was essential. One common aspect among all teams was their ability and willingness to work together. They quickly learned that success would follow if they maximized their individual strengths and utilized roles that would allow them to make the most of their time constraints.

They had fun! Perhaps the most important part of the case competition was the teams’ ability to make the most of the opportunity. The case was no easy task to conquer, but we enjoyed watching the students come together and have fun while doing it!

Thoughts from the Teams:

What was your biggest challenge in the competition and what would you have done differently?

“I think our organization was a big challenge. We probably would have liked to split things up more accordingly and played into our roles so that we could better know what we were doing. For example, having a storyteller, then someone in charge of analysis”

~ Neha Faizan, Khrystyna Iablon, and Innama Babna

“Time was a struggle. We had a lot of material to cover. Looking back, we would have brainstormed better. We also would have split our work better for sure. We decided on the spot which was difficult.”

~ Ambar Johal, Dhriti Agarwal, and Sakthi Annamalai

What was the most enjoyable part of participating in the competition?

“It was the stress that was the fun part. Irrespective of how the presentation went, it was an amazing experience. Even if it’s hard, it's nice, You don’t want to just give up.”

~ Ambar Johal, Dhriti Agarwal, and Sakthi Annamalai

“We feel more confident after doing the competition. It was a pretty interesting case!”

~ Neha Faizan, Khrystyna Iablon, and Innama Babna

“We loved our group dynamic and our emphasis on our creativity”

~ Sofia D’Agostini, Daria Despi, and Ishmeen Bansal

THE RECRUITMENT WORKSHOP:

Following the case competition, the students engaged in a Recruitment workshop hosted by Tanveel Irshad. The workshop allowed them to gain valuable insights on optimizing their potential, marketing themselves, and enhancing their chances of securing their desired employment this upcoming recruitment season.

Here are some key takeaways from the workshop:

  1. Network Strategically: Tanveel emphasized the significance of networking as a powerful means of distinguishing yourself from a sea of applicants. It is important to ensure that you network with purpose and that you continue to maintain your relationships and build on your connections.

  2. Craft a Compelling ‘Tell me about yourself’: This common question asked in interviews has the ability to give you a standout moment. In your answer to this question, it is important that you showcase your skills, emphasize your character, and assert why you are the ideal candidate for the position. Perfecting your statement will help you leave a lasting impression in interviews.

  3. Display Your Confidence: An integral part of the recruitment process is your ability to navigate questions with ease and confidence. Tanveel stressed the importance of interview preparation. He suggested that candidates anticipate potential questions and practice their responses with a friend. Although it is easier said than done, it is important to maintain composure and show confidence. Hold a strong belief in your skills and qualifications.

Overall, it was an insightful and impactful workshop!

CONCLUDING REMARKS:

Overall, the action packed day was a huge success. On behalf of IMG, we extend our gratitude to our guest judges Ilona Lupa and Mojgan Shadbakhsh, and also to our sponsors GURU and RBC, whose support played a pivotal role in the event's success.

Lastly, thank you to all the students who came out and participated in the case competition and workshop. It was a joy to see groups come together and present their insightful and creative proposals!
