expectations
poem by: ashlie dhugga
the word “expectation”
in itself
is a force of nature,
with the ability to cause a storm
what does society expect of you?
what does your family expect of you?
what do your friends expect of you?
what do you expect of yourself?
and with that,
the downpour becomes violent
but it is not the pressure of the rain you feel hitting your body
it is the pressure of each thought in the form of an answer
your body feels heavy
not from the wet clothes,
but from the weight of each expectation
that you carry with you as you walk
In the midst of the storm
It becomes easy to forget
you are in control
you may ask yourself,
how can i control a storm?
you are in control of your life -
you have the ability;
the ability to meet expectations,
along with the ability to choose not to
with this you must maintain a balance -
which expectations are worth fulfilling?
is it worth opening the umbrella,
or would you rather walk through the rain?
