Level 100: Procrastination
Article by Emeka Balakumar
Procrastination reminds me of the last level of a video game, the most challenging part and the most satisfying to complete. With my to-do list growing, my will to complete tasks diminishes with it. Sometimes procrastination can be useful, as it can give ourselves a break from the stress of working, but too much of it will end up leaving us in a pile of work. We have all had a conversation in our head, telling ourselves that we will try to break that routine of procrastination, but it is hard to break the cycle.
I am one of those who fall into the habit of pushing off my tasks until my brain realizes that I have very little time to complete them. But to beat the game’s final level, you will need to beat previous levels and work towards gaining enough experience to win.
Level 5: Pick Your Poison
At this level, you are faced with the challenge of picking between two glasses, one of which is filled with poison. You can choose to complete the task now and get it over with, so there will no need to think about it in the future. On the other hand, you can choose to procrastinate, stress over the thought of it, and then refuse to complete the tasks at your true potential due to time constraints. When you look at the two options given to you, the easier (yet harder to consume option) is the first one. Though it seems like a hassle at the start, the long term benefits will shine at the end of your journey.
Level 10: 2 Long Tasks and 3 Small Tasks
Start your day by creating a to-do list consisting of three small tasks and two long tasks, just like the game “Among Us”. Whenever you feel you don’t have the energy to sit down and work on a 2-3 hour task, work on a small task and get it out of the way. Every little step towards finishing the job is still progress. When you are on a roll and feel productive, you will experience a blissful feeling of accomplishment as tasks get crossed off your list.
Level 30: Find Teammates
“Teamwork makes the dream work” is true in any situation. If you feel that you keep getting off track, make a study group with friends. Study groups don’t even need to be on the same subject. My friends and I love to call each other and sit on call while we both work on assignments for different classes. We keep each other on track and give each other ideas if we are stuck. Holding each other accountable helps us stay away from distractions and keeps us connected even through the pandemic.
Level 50: Find Your Theme Song
Every good game also has a good soundtrack. Make a study playlist of music that keeps you on track. Not everyone can vibe with the same type of music when studying, as I find myself feeling more concentrated when listening to extremely energetic music. Experiment with songs, try different playlists and see what works best for you. Keep track of other songs in your playlist and keep adding as you find new tunes.
Level 75: Take a Break
As mentioned at the beginning, procrastination can be helpful as it can give your mind a break. With the online world comes a lot of strain on our bodies, mentally and physically. I tend to become numb to my work, and I become more prone to mistakes the longer I stare at the same assignment. Take a break, enjoy a snack, or go out for a walk. This gives your mind and body some time away from the screen and gives you some time to recharge your productivity levels.
Level 100: Beating Procrastination
Though this game may take some time and patience, you will learn more about yourself and the work you do. The skills you build over time will help in later situations, as you will find ways to use these skills to create a schedule for yourself that doesn’t involve much stress, last-minute working, and all-nighters.
